Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

The denotation of this magazine cover is of a man in his middle age spinning a basketball on his finger.

The connotation of this is that he could be a basketball coach that works in a college and has good basketball skills because he is spinning the basketball on his finger.

Mise En Scène

Costume

As the picture is only of the top half of his body it only shows him wearing a sports T-shirt. Him choosing to wear this type of t-shirt which is 'Nike' which is connoted to be a sports company making me presume he is about to do a sport. Also him having his buttons all the way to the top also makes me think that he is matured and is a coach not a student in the college.
Props

The only prop that he has is a basketball which is spinning on his finger. The basketball on its on connotes the sport basketball but relating to the man he is spinning it on his finger with ease connoting that he has experience in this sport and has been playing basketball for a long time.

Setting

The setting of this magazine cover is very vague but from what I can see ill assume that he is in a sports hall. Expressing the meanings of him being in a sports hall is that he is about to play a game of basketball or that he is about to teach basketball to college students. Also is connotes exercise and the factors that are involved in sports/basketball.

Lighting

The lighting all over the image is daylight, high-key lighting. The high-key lighting connotes friendship and warmness and gives an inviting feeling to the cover magazine making people feel invited to read the magazine. Also it allows you to not to feel threatened by man on the front cover, instead it almost makes you automatically friends with him.

Non-Verbal Communication (NVC)

The mans Non-Verbal communication is that he is smiling and staniding with some athourity but has a soft factor with it and his arm is up spinning abasketball on his finger. The authority with his stance makes me think that he is a leader or coach but on the other hand his smile and the factor of softeness connotes friendship and a great person to work with or to learn from.

Masthead

The masthead of this magazine is Athlon Sports the masthead isn't a main part of the magazine. It is a very bland logo with only white and black texts behind the opposite colour, this connotes that the magazine will be serious and will be straight to the point about basketball. Also Half of the masthead is a sans-serif and the other half is serif, the mix fonts can connote the mix ideas about basketball or sports in todays society and the fact the half is white the other half is black it shows that it can be dim, dark, boring and it can be interesting, bright and pure.

Cover-lines

The main cover-lines are college basket ball and the cult of Calipari. These show that the magazine is definitely going to be about basketball. the cult of connotes, the best, the greatest and referring to the professional basketball coach who is head coach of University of Memphis, the University of Massachusetts and the NBA's New Jersey's Nets . The sans-serif fonts show that this a modern magazine and basketball is a sport that more college students want to play.

Anchorage

The anchorage of this magazine cover denotes a main theme of sans serif fonts. This connotes that this magazine is very modern and that basketball is a modern sport in a college society. Also the sans-serif font reiterates the friendly feel and gripping sensation because the font connotes modernness and this is what are used to therefore, feel like we are involved in it.

Target Audience

The target audience considering all of my points of this magazine would be (male and female but mainly male because of the basketball factor) aged from 16 to 18, because it's a college magazine and people that like to do sports, mainly basketball .

Induction: Textual Analysis for Movie Poster

This is a poster of the Indiana Jones movie which has a man standing in front of a fire in a cave. It connotes that he is going on mission in which he will encounter danger as the fiery skull implies and he is walking in to danger because of the steps leading into the skull which is why his fist is clinched to defend himself. His costume is a tan shirt and trousers with vintage swede hat. This makes me think that he is going on an adventure where he will have to pass through trouble, also it seems like he is an archaeologist adventuring for something. His props is a whip his signature weapon, a gun and a small bag. This props give me the idea that he is going to be faced with danger throughout his journey and he needs to protect himself to succeed and the bag connotes that he has tools as an archaeologist does so he can search for what he is looking for. The lighting is low key giving a dark and dim effect about what he about to get into, also it make me think that he will be faced with dark people and simply working in caves allot of the time throughout the movie. The Non-verbal communication of this poster is Indiana Jones has a very masculine and powerful stance and this is exaggerated by the low angle shot which makes him look bigger. Also his fist is clinched together tightly. This indicates to me that he is someone you don't want to mess around with and in the movie he will be getting into trouble with dangerous people which he has to defend himself from.

Induction: Re-Creation a Movie Magazine Front Cover

When re creating the max payne magazine cover I found using the bases of photoshop for example the text tool, the select tool, creating layers and duplicating layer etc. I would like to learn how to use the plaster tool and understand how to use it in photo editing with confidence and finally I would like to understand how to create more complicated texts for example having different lighting in it or effectively making it three-dimensional.
