Denotation
The denotation of this print media is a double page spread, consisting of a black and white image of a music artist. There are other quotations and headings to the left of the subject, which consist of the colours blue and black.
Character
This double page spread photograph is of an American rap artist called LL cool J
Costume
The costume of the man in the image is that of a black hat and a black t-shirt. The colour black is the main colour in the picture and this colour connotes power, mystery and fear (factors often associated with the Hip Hop genre). The NY cap allows the reader to understand what genre of music the double page spread is about. This is because rap/hip hop artists are stereotyped in society as wearing this type of cap.
Composition
The composition of this image is that he has got his finger pointing upwards and his head is turned away. His hat is over his eyes, but his body still facing forwards. The hat covering his face adds to the mystery that the colour black gives because humans use eye contact to reassure themselves of the person which this image doesn’t give. His finger pointing is a gesture used a lot by music artists in the genre of rap, this gesture connotes going up or the only way is up, which is what all artists want from their future.
Headline
The headline of this double page spread is “He is Legend”. This phrase is associated with people that are highly respected and have done well in their career such as LL Cool J. The connotations of "legend" are myth and something that is unreal. This shows that the person given this title is one of a kind and has succeeded in everything he did. The font of the headline is in between both serif and sans-serif, traditional and modern which again adds to the mystery of the spread.
Target Audience
The target audience for this type of double page spread would be people that are in to the genre of music rap and hip hop, because that’s what LL cool J represents. Both genders between the ages 15 and 35 would read this genre of magazine due to colour scheme of mainly black and white which wouldn't catch the eye of youth, and because rap/hip hop is quite a new genre of music so people is their late 40’s wouldn’t be used this music.
